  • NSCDC arrests 36 scavengers in FCT for possessing illicit drugs and weapons, following a ban by Minister Nyesom Wike
  • The suspects were found with cannabis, codeine, knives, and iron rods; residents are advised to avoid patronizing them for safety

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), 36 scavengers have been taken into custody by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on suspicion of possessing illegal narcotics and firearms.

This was revealed to reporters in Abuja on Friday by Dr. Olusola Odumosu, the NSCDC Commandant in the Federal Capital Territory.

He said that the individuals were apprehended throughout the FCT.

Nyesom Wike, the minister of the FCT, had outlawed scavengers’ operations in the city.

Additionally, the minister halted pan-takers’ operations throughout the city for a period of two weeks.

According to Odumosu, the suspects were found in possession of four daggers, three Jack knives, two chisels, and three knives.

Other items included bits of iron rods, rubbish sacks, 45 wraps of cannabis sativa, 10 bottles of codeine syrup, and narcotic medications.

“The suspects are currently being investigated and profiled and I will ensure that due diligence is followed in their prosecution,” Odumosu stated.

The corps commandant advised FCT residents to dispose of refuse through the appropriate waste management companies and stop patronising scavengers, popularly called “Baba Nbola” for the sake of safety.

“Chase scavengers away whenever you see them in front of your houses, streets, neighbourhoods, or estates.

“Give us relevant information about any suspicious movements or activities of these criminal scavengers who have been restricted to operate at dump sites only,” he added.
