Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, have criticized FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for neglecting healthcare facilities and workers’ welfare in Abuja.
George Ebong, President of resident doctors in the FCT, expressed concerns on Channels Television, stating that despite Wike’s efforts in road construction, government-owned health institutions have been abandoned, with many in poor condition.
“That’s just where we have our concerns. The minister has been very busy with projects, fixing roads, and all of that. We feel that he should also focus on the hospitals right now.
“We feel that we are the human abandoned project. No matter the things he does by fixing roads and bridges, the hospitals are the very first point of innovation and rehabilitation. They are hallowed ground; he cannot neglect them,” he said.
WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that the doctors embarked on a three-day warning strike due to unpaid salaries and allowances, following the expiration of a three-week ultimatum.
The strike halted activities in government hospitals across Abuja, affecting areas such as Wuse, Asokoro, and Maitama.
According to Ebong, doctors face challenges, including lack of electricity, inadequate medication, and insufficient staff, with some hospitals having only one doctor on duty.
Many doctors have not received their salaries for six months, despite taking on additional responsibilities.
“I urge the minister to please try to ensure that all the wages are paid. I urge the minister to please visit all the hospitals and see the state in which the hospitals are at the moment,” he said.
