  • Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni, a former FCT Minister and Plateau South Senator, passed away at 82 after a prolonged illness
  • Governor Mutfwang described Useni’s death as a significant loss to Plateau State, the Armed Forces, and the entire nation

Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), passed away at 82.

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed this in a statement on Thursday in Jos. The announcement shared through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Gyang Bere, revealed that Useni died after battling a long illness.

Useni, who served as the representative for Plateau South Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2015 to 2019, leaves behind a legacy of service.

Governor Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a significant blow to Plateau State. He urged Useni’s family and the state’s residents to find comfort in God during this challenging period.

In his message, Mutfwang stated, “On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the President, the Armed Forces, and the Tarok nation over the loss of this respected elder statesman. I also sympathise with his immediate family and loved ones, urging them to remain strong and trust in God.”

During his illustrious career, Useni held several prominent roles. He served as Nigeria’s Minister of Transport and Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, among other appointments.

After retiring from the military, Useni transitioned into politics. He became the Deputy National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later contested as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Plateau State during the 2019 general elections.

Useni’s death marks the end of a life dedicated to service in both military and civilian capacities.
