  • Speaker commits to legislative actions supporting farmers, promoting digital innovation, and reducing food insecurity across Nigeria

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has declared that food security is a fundamental right for Nigerians, not a privilege. He made this statement in Abuja during the 22nd Annual Daily Trust Dialogue themed: “Food Security: Availability or Affordability?”

Represented by Dike John Okafor, Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Abbas assured Nigerians of the National Assembly’s commitment to enacting legislation that enhances agricultural production and guarantees food security nationwide.

He expressed concern about the high levels of malnutrition in Nigeria, particularly among children, many of whom suffer from stunted growth and micronutrient deficiencies.

“We are working on policies to support farmers with subsidies, access to credit, modern farming tools, and advanced techniques,” he said. “We aim to develop laws that promote digital innovation, e-commerce, and data protection, enhancing exports while reducing dependence on unnecessary imports.”

Abbas emphasized the need for collective efforts to tackle food insecurity. He urged young Nigerians to take the lead in agricultural initiatives, which he said are vital to addressing the nation’s food challenges.

“No Nigerian should go to bed hungry due to issues of availability or affordability. Food security is not a privilege; it is a fundamental right,” he said.

The Speaker expressed optimism that the renewed hope programme and the legislative agenda would significantly reduce food insecurity in Nigeria. He encouraged stakeholders at the dialogue to provide actionable recommendations that could further drive legislative efforts to achieve this goal.

“The House of Representatives is ready to partner with the media and other stakeholders to create and pass legislation that ensures food security for all Nigerians,” Abbas concluded.
