A major conference on electoral reform is set to take place in Abuja on Monday, focusing on strengthening democracy ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and former Military Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) will lead discussions alongside other top political figures.
Prominent participants include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Also joining the discourse is Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
The two-day event, themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathway to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” will feature a keynote address by former Ghanaian Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim will also address key challenges and prospects for the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, Dr. Otive Igbuzor, a founding Executive Director of the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development, explained the event’s purpose.
He stated that the conference aims to tackle pressing issues undermining Nigeria’s democracy.
Key topics will include electoral malpractices, weak political parties, governance challenges, corruption, and declining public trust.
Dr. Igbuzor emphasized the need for actionable solutions to ensure political parties better represent Nigerians’ needs and offer credible leadership options.
The discussions are expected to ignite reforms, laying a solid foundation for democracy and restoring faith in Nigeria’s electoral system.
