  • Leaders must commit to transparent governance, serving the people’s interests, and protecting their assets.
  • The best leaders prioritize their people’s interests, making laws that promote economic welfare and security, and ensuring the judiciary’s independence.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has asserted that the current administration will focus on combating corruption and insecurity to promote national unity.

He made this statement on Monday in Abuja at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

The event, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, was themed ‘Strengthening Nigeria’s democracy: Pathways to good governance and political integrity’

Shettima, represented by Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, emphasized that democracy, despite its flaws, remains the most effective system of government.

“I would like to assure Nigerians that our administration is acutely aware of many concerns over our direction and goals, particularly given the difficulties which some of our policies inevitably generate,” Shettima said.

The administration is working to address economic weaknesses and improve citizen security.

Shettima acknowledged that transitioning to a more promising future will come with challenges, but the administration is committed to mitigating difficulties and staying focused on its goals.

The administration will listen to feedback, make necessary adjustments, and ensure accountability in its stewardship.

Shettima expressed confidence that Nigeria will overcome current difficulties and reach its full potential, becoming a key player in the global arena.

“It has been said many times that democracy is an imperfect system, yet superior to all others.”

The administration will continue to demonstrate the value of democratic systems by addressing economic weaknesses, securing communities, fighting corruption, and promoting national cohesion.

“I would like to appeal to fellow Nigerians to join us in this challenging but ultimately rewarding journey.”

Shettima noted that elections should go beyond periodic voting, instead fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and people-centered governance.

The vice president emphasized the administration’s commitment to enhancing the democratic system’s quality and core components.

Elected leaders in Nigeria have a significant responsibility to promote democracy through good governance, accountability, and respect for citizens’ welfare.

Shettima reminded Nigerians that elected leaders owe their positions to the democratic process and must continually ensure its effectiveness.

“Nigerian democracy must mean a lot more than asking Nigerians to line up every four years to elect leaders.”
