  • The #EndSARS protests erupted in October 2020, sparked by decades of police brutality and extortion by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
  • SARS was disbanded as the protest gained momentum across the country.

Former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande has alleged that supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, orchestrated the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Akande claimed the protests were “manufactured” to thwart Bola Tinubu’s presidential ambitions.

The former governor made these assertions in an interview with Edmund Obilo posted on YouTube.

Akande, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), further alleged that the #EndSARS protests originated in and were funded from the United States.

“EndSARS was aimed and designed to be the end of Tinubu. Those behind the EndSARS knew what they were doing,” Akande said.

“The Obidients were behind the EndSARS. It was manufactured from America just to stop Tinubu.”

“The Obidients came from America to do EndSARS, which later became a movement. They could not form a party so they joined whichever party.”

“It was well-planned and organised with a lot of money from America.”

Akande recounted persuading Tinubu to contest the 2023 presidential election despite initial reservations due to funding constraints.

Tinubu expressed doubts about running, citing financial limitations.

“They called me and said, ‘come, there is trouble. Anybody that talks to him about the presidency, he was quarrelling with them’,” Akande recalled.

“I was in Lagos so I met him. He said, ‘Baba, do you have money? If I had the kind of money that people have to be president, I would rank with Dangote’.”

Akande assured Tinubu that his candidacy would represent the interests of the Yoruba ethnic group.
