  • The Muslim Rights Concern cautions that extending IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure could weaken police efficiency and erode public trust in law enforcement
  • MURIC’s Executive Director urges Egbetokun to step down, stating that prolonging his term may reverse recent progress in tackling insecurity

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has cautioned against extending the tenure of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement on Monday, MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, warned that an extension could weaken efficiency, cause internal divisions, and erode public trust in the police force.

He expressed concerns over the amendment to the Police Act, which now allows the IGP to serve until the end of the term stated in their appointment letter, instead of retiring at 60.

Akintola acknowledged that the police had recently made progress in tackling insecurity, rescuing kidnapped victims, and solving major crimes. However, he feared prolonging Egbetokun’s tenure might reverse these gains and create discontent within the force.

“MURIC’s stance is significant because, although the issue is not directly related to Muslim rights, it affects national security and the welfare of all Nigerians,” he noted.

The proposed extension has sparked debate. While some believe it ensures stability, others argue that it contradicts the Police Act.

Akintola urged Egbetokun to step down now to protect his reputation. “Real heroes leave the stage while the ovation is loudest,” he said, advising the IGP to make a dignified exit before controversy damages his legacy.
