  • To boost enforcement, customs has installed surveillance cameras at its Abuja headquarters

Nigeria’s Customs Comptroller General, Bashir Adeniyi, has declared “total war” on smugglers, calling their activities a threat to the economy.

Speaking in Yola on Thursday, he reaffirmed confidence in Operations Whirl Wind, a newly launched customs unit tackling smuggling nationwide.

Adeniyi announced that officials in Adamawa and Taraba had seized 199,495 litres of smuggled petrol worth ₦199.5 million. He said over 1.7 million litres of fuel had been intercepted in 2024, preventing illegal exports to neighbouring countries.

To boost enforcement, customs has installed surveillance cameras at its Abuja headquarters, enabling real-time monitoring of border activities.
