  • Coach Hugo Broos believes South Africa can secure a World Cup spot, emphasizing the importance of upcoming qualifiers against Benin
  • South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin each have seven points in Group C, making every match crucial for automatic qualification

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is confident South Africa can secure a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket ahead of Nigeria. However, their next challenge is a crucial qualifier against Benin Republic in Côte d’Ivoire on March 27, 2025.

South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin currently top Group C with seven points each. Lesotho follows closely with five points, while Nigeria and Zimbabwe trail behind with three and two points, respectively. Since only the group leader qualifies automatically, every match is vital.

Before facing Benin, South Africa will take on Lesotho on March 17, the same day Nigeria plays Rwanda away. Then, on March 24, Bafana Bafana will travel to Côte d’Ivoire to battle Benin, coinciding with Nigeria’s home game against Zimbabwe in Uyo.

Broos believes beating Benin will strengthen South Africa’s chances of qualifying for the tournament, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, he warns that Benin is tougher than many expect.

South Africa’s qualification hopes also benefit from a key advantage. Lesotho and Zimbabwe, both Southern African teams, play their “home” matches in South Africa due to inadequate facilities. This logistical edge could prove crucial in their bid to outpace Nigeria.

Broos emphasized the importance of upcoming matches, saying, “Starting with Lesotho – we are playing here in South Africa, so this is a must-win. Benin is stronger than many think, especially away. But we have good experiences in Ivory Coast, so we can be a little optimistic. Still, these will be tough games.”

The coach also hinted at retirement after the 2026 World Cup—if South Africa qualifies. He expressed his ambition to lead the team on the world stage before stepping down.

“It’s a big goal for me. I was there as a player, but I want to be there as a coach. Next year, I’ll be 74, and I think it’s a great moment to end my career. Let’s hope we can achieve it.”
