- Umakhihe also revealed that during their investigation, the committee uncovered evidence of financial misconduct, mismanagement, and possible corruption.
The Edo state governor, Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to implement the findings and recommendations of the asset verification committee.
In November 2024, Governor Okpebholo established a 14-member committee to investigate the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
The governor stated that probing Obaseki’s administration aligns with his vision for progress and responsible governance in Edo State.
Ernest Umakhihe, Chairman of the committee, presented the report, highlighting its significance in shaping the state’s future.
According to Umakhihe, the committee recommended a thorough assessment of current and previous contracts to ensure fairness and public benefit.
“This report serves as a pivotal moment for Edo State, marking the need to take stock of our current position and chart a course toward greater accountability, financial prudence, and responsible asset management,” Umakhihe said.
“The committee’s work involved diligent research, site inspections, stakeholder engagements, and verification to ensure transparency in handling state assets and liabilities.”
“The report provides a comprehensive breakdown of Edo State’s assets and liabilities, including outstanding debts, contractual obligations, and financial commitments.”
“One of the critical aspects of this report is the revelation of significant financial obligations left behind by the previous administration, some of which pose a heavy burden on the state’s fiscal health.”
“These liabilities, including outstanding debts and contracts, require urgent attention and strategic management.”
“In light of these findings, we strongly recommend that the relevant authorities launch further investigations to hold those responsible accountable.”
“Prosecuting individuals found culpable will send a strong message that Edo State is committed to integrity and transparency in governance.”
“As we submit this report, we do so with the firm belief that its recommendations will serve as a guide toward a more transparent, accountable, and prosperous Edo State.”
Governor Okpebholo, through his spokesperson Fred Itua, commended the committee’s dedication and assured them that their recommendations would be implemented.
“I appreciate the committee for a job well done and the time invested in this exercise. I understand the challenges you faced, yet you successfully carried out this crucial assignment,” Governor Okpebholo said.
“Rest assured that your findings and recommendations will be implemented appropriately.”
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to resolving key issues, promising decisive action to enhance governance and responsible state resource management.
