- The directive, announced during a virtual meeting with senior police officers
Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate ban on officers carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian clothing.
The directive, announced during a virtual meeting with senior police officers, aims to enforce professionalism and respect for human rights within the Nigeria Police Force.
A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the decision follows multiple complaints about police misconduct.
“The IGP has made it clear that no operative should be seen carrying assault arms in mufti. Any violation of human rights will not be tolerated and will attract severe consequences,” Adejobi said.
Egbetokun also warned tactical squads against misuse of power and improper dressing, stressing that officers must adhere to standard operating procedures and wear approved uniforms.
In addition, he directed that cases must not be transferred without his written approval, warning that unauthorised transfers cause unnecessary delays to justice.
The move comes amid growing public concerns over police misconduct and is seen as an effort to restore trust in law enforcement.
