Senator Goje highlighted that the North-East is excluded from the super highway project despite the administration’s road projects
The Senate has called on the federal government to approve the rehabilitation of dilapidated roads nationwide, particularly in the North-East, to enhance socio-economic and political development.
During Thursday’s plenary, the Red Chamber also urged the government to extend the “Renewed Hope Super Highway Project” to the Northeast. They argued that this would integrate the region into the country’s economic framework.
The resolution followed a motion by Senator Danjuma Goje, a former Gombe State governor and ex-minister, representing Gombe Central.
He highlighted that despite the Tinubu administration’s extensive road projects, the North-East had only two approved projects: Yola–Fufore–Gurin Road in Adamawa State (N11.81 billion) and Lamido Road in Taraba State (N7.68 billion), from a total budget of N4.2 trillion.
Goje pointed out that many crucial roads in the North-East remain in poor condition. These include Bauchi–Gombe, Biu–Gombe, Potiskum–Gombe, Darazo–Gombe, Numan–Jalingo, Yola–Mubi, and Yola–Michika–Madagali–Gwoza–Bama roads.
Others in dire need of repairs include Ngorore–Mayo Belwa–Zing–Jalingo, Mayo Belwa–Jada–Ganye, Biu–Gombi–Maranraba, Biu–Damboa–Maiduguri, and Biu–Damaturu roads.
He also stressed that the North-East remains the only region excluded from the super highway project.
The Senate further urged the government to prioritize rehabilitating all deteriorating roads nationwide. Lawmakers commended the administration for its ambitious road projects, emphasizing their positive impact on the nation’s economic and political landscape.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, appreciated Senator Goje’s motion. He reaffirmed that road infrastructure remains a key priority for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Akpabio also reiterated the government’s commitment to completing major projects like the Sokoto–Lagos and Lagos–Calabar roads, ensuring enhanced economic activities across the country.
