  • Babachir Lawal also noted that Tinubu’s policies have worsened economic hardship, fueling dissatisfaction and political opposition.
  • He had suggested Tinubu could face the same fate as Goodluck Jonathan, warning that financial inducements may not secure northern support in 2027.

The Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, has disputed comments made by former SGF, Dr Babachir Lawal, regarding President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 ambitions.

This is according to a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr Henshaw Ogubike, on Monday in Abuja.

Matawalle stressed that President Tinubu has achieved notable milestones in governance, and Lawal will be surprised by the overwhelming support the President will receive from the North.

The President has implemented impactful reforms in key areas such as security, economy, infrastructure, and governance, Matawalle said.

He noted that security forces neutralized over 8,000 insurgents and apprehended 11,600 criminals, recovering more than 10,000 weapons in 2024.

Matawalle stated that this robust action significantly improved security across the North.

He added that the successful rescue of approximately 8,000 kidnap victims underscores the government’s commitment to citizens’ safety.

“The establishment of the Multi-Agency Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell in December 2024 has enhanced strategic coordination in the fight against kidnapping.”

Matawalle highlighted the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development to tap into the North’s agricultural potential, promoting economic growth and empowering millions.

“This initiative is expected to transform rural communities and contribute to food security.”

He noted that the recent decline in grain prices across the country testifies to the effectiveness of the government’s agricultural policies.

Matawalle added that Tinubu’s administration prioritized infrastructure projects vital for economic growth in the North.

He stated that local government autonomy has empowered local administrations to function effectively, ensuring accountability and better governance.

“President Tinubu has made significant contributions in all regions of Nigeria, including the North.

Matawalle urged critics to evaluate Tinubu’s scorecard objectively rather than dismissing his efforts.

“We must unite in our support for Mr President as he continues to work towards a prosperous and secure Nigeria.”
