  • The Federal Government will investigate the hoarding of relief materials intended for IDPs after discovering stockpiles in classrooms at the Durumi IDP camp in Abuja

  • Commissioner Aliyu Ahmed vowed to probe other IDP camps nationwide and assured IDPs of the government’s commitment to their welfare and education

The federal government has pledged to investigate the alleged hoarding of relief materials meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Abuja.

Aliyu Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), made this known after uncovering stockpiled relief supplies inside classrooms at the Durumi IDP camp.

Ahmed visited the camp to inaugurate a computer center donated by the Brand Life Vision Foundation. Still, he discovered that food and non-food items meant for IDPs were being stored instead of distributed.

“On our arrival, we saw things that should not happen in this camp. Some classrooms were being used to store food and non-food relief items instead of distributing them to the IDPs. We will not tolerate this. We will address the situation seriously,” he stated.

The commissioner also announced plans to launch a broader investigation into similar cases at other IDP camps nationwide.

“What we found here is alarming. We will extend our probe to other camps because if it is happening here, it could be happening elsewhere,” he added.

The government reassured the IDPs of its continued commitment to their well-being and pledged to support their education by collaborating with the Universal Basic Education Commission to provide teachers for displaced children.

Hajia Binta Sidi, Founder of Brightlife Vision Foundation, revealed plans to train 1,000 IDPs across the country. She emphasized that the foundation focuses on supporting destitute children, underprivileged individuals, IDPs, and orphans.

While commending the commission for installing solar power for the ICT training center, she affirmed that the foundation would provide teachers to train the beneficiaries.
