Vice President Kashim Shettima has mourned the passing of Afenifere leader Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who died at 96 in Lagos.

Shettima acknowledged Adebanjo’s significant role in Nigeria’s democratic journey, from Action Group to NADECO.

In a condolence message, Shettima paid tribute to Adebanjo’s lifetime of service, calling him “a living bridge that connected us to the foundational struggles of our democracy.”

Shettima noted that Adebanjo’s passing marked a significant loss, saying, “We had not just lost a leader; we had lost an institution.”

Adebanjo consistently advocated for a more equitable Nigeria until his final days, Shettima remarked.

VP Shettima described Adebanjo as a titan in Nigeria’s political history, whose contributions to democracy were invaluable.

Shettima quoted African tradition, saying, “When an elderly person transitions, a vital chapter of our history departs with them.”

Adebanjo’s family, including his 94-year-old wife, received Shettima’s heartfelt condolences.

Shettima hoped the family found strength to bear the irreparable loss.
