A Nigerian asylum seeker and former footballer, Quaham Babatunde, has been stabbed to death in Dublin, Ireland.

The 34-year-old was attacked on South Anne Street in the early hours of Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Babatunde, who previously played for Italian clubs Monselice and Reggiana Primavera, had faced legal troubles, including a rape accusation in Italy in 2018, which he denied. He was later deported.

The altercation in Dublin reportedly stemmed from a dispute over club seating. Babatunde, described by friends as a peacemaker, was fatally stabbed in the chest. Another man was injured but survived.

Police have arrested three suspects, including a 23-year-old apprehended in Belfast while trying to flee to Liverpool.

Friends say Babatunde was trying to rebuild his life and had recently taken an exam to work as a security guard. His death has sparked concerns about violence in Dublin’s nightlife and the struggles faced by asylum seekers.
