Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged President Bola Tinubu to create a department to manage presidential libraries.

Jonathan made this request on Thursday in Abuja at the launch of Babangida’s book, “A Journey in Service,” and the opening of his presidential library.

The event also included fundraising for the library. Jonathan emphasized that while every president shapes history, not all contribute to recording it, which strengthens documented history.

“When I left office, I spent six months touring America, visiting most presidential libraries, which are considered federal assets,” Jonathan said.

“So, Mr. President (Tinubu), establish a department in the Secretary of Government’s office. The American government assists because these libraries are historical resources.”

Jonathan commended Babangida on his memoir, noting that Nigeria’s history is incomplete without his story.

“Ibrahim Babangida is a charismatic leader; people still consult him. We thank God for his wisdom and mentorship,” Jonathan said.

Jonathan acknowledged Babangida’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure development and social mobilization.

“Nigeria’s history cannot be written without dedicating a substantial part to your presidential service,” Jonathan added.

He encouraged other leaders, especially former presidents, to establish presidential libraries to better document Nigeria’s history.
