  • Hafsat Abiola-Costello welcomed IBB’s admission that MKO Abiola won the June 12 election, settling a long-standing debate

  • She reflected on June 12 as a symbol of Nigerians’ aspirations for unity and a better future

Hafsat Abiola-Costello, daughter of the late MKO Abiola and Kudirat Abiola, has responded to former military leader Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s (Rtd.) recent admission that Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Babangida made the revelation on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of his memoir, A Journey In Service.

Reacting on Friday, Abiola-Costello said IBB’s confirmation had finally settled the long-standing debate over the election’s outcome.

“For those who kept doubting that Nigerians spoke decisively on that day, I’m glad that General IBB’s admission that MKO won the election can now restate the matter,” she said.

She reflected on the significance of June 12, stating that whenever the date is mentioned, her thoughts immediately turn to her parents, MKO and Kudirat Abiola. However, she emphasized that the day’s importance goes beyond her family, representing the collective aspirations of Nigerians for a better and more united nation.

“When anyone mentions June 12, my mind always goes to MKO and Kudi. However, June 12’s impact endured because the vote cast that day was for a better future and national unity. MKO may have symbolized the Hope ‘93 campaign, but June 12 was about more than just one man—about Nigeria’s promise to its people.”

She lamented the annulment of the election, describing it as unjust but expressed gratitude for her parents’ unwavering commitment to democracy.

“It’s heartbreaking that an unjust annulment overturned such a landmark decision by the people. However, I will forever be grateful to both MKO and Kudi for their courage in prioritizing the people’s desire for a better Nigeria over personal safety. May such commitment continue to inspire future generations,” she added.
