The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Samuel Ogbuku, has urged Nigerians to support the Nigeria Police Force in combating crime and social vices.

Mr Ogbuku made the appeal at the fifth edition of the Strategic Security Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The event, themed Improving Nigeria’s Internal Security and Economic Prosperity through Inclusive Policing, aimed to enhance policing strategies across the country.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the NDDC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, highlighted Mr Ogbuku’s call for mental health evaluations of police officers.

“The Nigeria Police Force should ensure periodic vetting and evaluation of its officers to identify those who are drifting,” Mr Ogbuku said. “The Police Authority should also conduct psychological testing to ensure that emotional intelligence is applied during their duties.”

The NDDC chief praised police officers for their sacrifices and outlined the Commission’s contributions to boosting security in the Niger Delta region.

He said the NDDC had recently installed 60kva solar inverters at police headquarters in the nine states of the Niger Delta, with the Imo State installation already completed and others underway.

The Commission has also provided communication gadgets to the Rivers State Police Command and repaired masts and armoured personnel carriers in Rivers and Bayelsa states.

“In Bayelsa State, we supplied six 250-horsepower Yamaha outboard engines and rehabilitated six others to combat crime in the Niger Delta region,” Mr Ogbuku added.

He emphasised that the donations reinforced the partnership between the NDDC and the police in promoting security and stability in the region.
