- President Tinubu approved the request, given the poor maternal and neonatal mortality indices in the Northeastern region and other health indicators in Gombe State.
The federal government has assumed control of the general hospital, Kumo, situated in Gombe state and transformed it into a Federal Medical Centre.
With the establishment of the Kumo Federal Medical Centre, Gombe State now has two federal health institutions, alongside the Federal Teaching Hospital, previously a medical centre.
In a statement released on Sunday, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the decision aims to improve healthcare in Gombe and the Northeast.
The statement read, “The Kumo Federal Medical Centre will serve as a tertiary health hospital, contribute to the training of medical personnel, and boost health care service in Gombe State and the Northeast generally.”
“Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya formally requested the takeover of the facility.”
“President Tinubu approved the request, given the poor maternal and neonatal mortality indices in the Northeastern region and other health indicators in Gombe State.”
Before its upgrade, the Federal Teaching Hospital was originally functioning as a medical centre before attaining its current status as a teaching hospital.
As stated in the release, Tinubu praised Governor Yahaya for prioritising public welfare, noting that the hospital’s conversion would strengthen healthcare services across the region.
