Fubara calls for peace, asks lawmakers to prioritise Rivers state’s interests

On February 28, the supreme court upheld a federal high court ruling preventing the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the accountant-general of the federation from disbursing monthly allocations to Rivers state.

  • The supreme court also invalidated the local government election conducted in Rivers state on October 5, 2024.
  • Fubara assured that he would abide by the verdict of the apex court.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers has called on state house of assembly members to focus on citizens’ well-being and encourage harmony to resolve the current political crisis.

Fubara made this appeal on Thursday while inaugurating some development projects within the Okrika LGA of the state.

The governor stressed the importance of stability in governance and encouraged dissatisfied politicians to move forward while honouring the supreme court’s rulings.

“It is important at this stage that we all embrace peace,” Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara’s chief press secretary, quoted him as saying.

“The supreme court has made its judgment, we don’t have any option than to abide by it.

“And, by the special grace of God, we have started the process. We are appealing to other parties, consider the interest of Rivers State, it is important.

“The only thing that we owe this State is peace and development. I am open any day, any time for total peace in our state, because if I have to govern well, there is a need for peace to prevail.”

Recall that on Wednesday, the governor was denied entry into the Rivers House of Assembly quarters in Port Harcourt, where he intended to present the 2025 budget, encountering locked gates.

The assembly quarters function as the legislative chamber for the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers assembly, which remains aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike.

Fubara and Wike have been engaged in a power struggle over dominance in the state’s political affairs, resulting in deep divisions within the Rivers assembly.

In December 2024, the governor submitted a budget proposal of N1.1 trillion for 2025 to the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led state house of assembly, which is loyal to him.
