Opposition coalition won’t shake ruling APC — acting chair, Dalori

  • Dalori said reconciliation efforts would target all aggrieved APC members from ward, local government and state structures nationwide.
  • He stressed that party unity is key as “politics needs people, and people need to be cared for in politics.”

The acting national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Ali Bukar Dalori, has assured party faithful of his resolve to unify aggrieved members across the country.

He also played down talks of a possible coalition threatening the ruling party’s grip on power ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dalori, who was until recently the deputy national chairman (north), formally stepped in as acting chairman on Monday.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, the party chieftain said his focus would be on healing internal divisions and strengthening the party’s base from the grassroots upward.

“I must rise and show all APC politicians that I have done my best to reconcile those who have had issues with one another,” he said.

“I will sit with them or appoint representatives who will go and meet them to prepare for this journey, which is greater than before, because politics needs people, and people need to be cared for in politics.”

He disclosed that no date has been agreed for the party’s national convention, stressing the need for broad consultation among stakeholders before such a decision.

“There are elders we must consult, and they are the ones to give the directive on whether the convention should hold or not,” he said.

While acknowledging that the party is not without internal concerns, Dalori pointed to recent developments in the north-east as examples of state-level challenges.

“Politics inherited this — our mouths are one, our heads are together, and we are still working with all of them,” he said.

Dalori claimed some opposition members who switched to the APC did so out of fear for their political relevance.

“I’m not hiding anything — they were afraid,” he said.

“If they had stayed there, they wouldn’t contest elections. They joined us so that their needs could be met.”

On attempts by rival parties to form a united front, Dalori said the APC remains solid and unshaken.

“I believe the expected implosion will not happen because we have sewn it together with a strong thread that will not break,” he said.

“Nobody is talking about a coalition except in Abuja. Even in Abuja, they are in a hotel, and when they are defeated in elections, they will leave the country.”

Meanwhile, the national working committee of the APC has scheduled July 24 for a national executive committee meeting to select a new substantive chairman.

The decision was reached on Monday during an emergency session of the NWC at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

The former national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, stepped down from the position last Friday.
