  • Jonathan said the memoir is a bold contribution to justice and helps preserve democratic values and national memory.
  • He praised Adoke’s strength under pressure, calling him a loyal friend who endured persecution with dignity and resilience.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that Mohammed Bello Adoke, former Attorney-General of the Federation, was hunted across the globe over the controversial OPL 245 oil deal.

Jonathan, represented by former Senate President, Pius Anyim, made the statement on Thursday during the public presentation of Adoke’s memoir, “OPL 245: Inside Story of the $1.3 Billion Nigerian Oil Block”, in Abuja.

He said Adoke was among several key figures of his administration who faced targeted campaigns after his government ended in 2015.

“The author of this memoir, Mr. Bello Adoke, was the Attorney-General of the Federation at that time,” he said.

“He was hunted across the globe.”

“But today, he’s alive, he’s healthy, and he’s here to tell his story.”

Jonathan described the memoir as a bold effort to set the record straight on the events surrounding the controversial oil block deal.

He added that the book contributes to justice and nation-building.

The former president praised Adoke for standing strong during the difficult period, calling him a friend and brother who remained resolute under pressure.

He used the occasion to remind public officeholders that power is temporary and must be exercised with fairness and accountability.

“Power belongs to God,” he said.

“The best anyone who is blessed with the opportunity of holding public office should do is to commit to the assignment and use the opportunity to uphold truth, justice, and fairness.”

Jonathan said no society can achieve peace or development without justice.

He explained that Adoke’s decision to write the memoir is not just personal but a national duty to preserve democratic values and truth.

“To some, the occasion may be a book presentation,” he said.

“To others, it is a celebration of victory over persecution.”
