President Bola Tinubu has delegated the Vice President Kashim Shettima, to stand in for him at the Golden Jubilee celebration of São Tomé and Príncipe’s independence.
Shettima is billed to leave Abuja on Saturday, July 12, for São Tomé, the capital of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe.
The president is currently outside the country, attending the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The presidency, in a statement on Friday, said Shettima will join other African and global leaders at the grand finale of events marking the island nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
The ceremony is expected to feature official addresses, colourful military parades, cultural displays and traditional performances that highlight the country’s unity and rich heritage.
Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe share robust bilateral ties, anchored by their joint efforts in the Gulf of Guinea.
This partnership is formally managed under the Nigeria–São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Development Authority, which oversees operations in the Joint Development Zone.
Nigeria has also extended technical aid, donations and pandemic-related support to the island nation in the past.
“Shettima will return to Nigeria immediately after the conclusion of the independence anniversary celebrations,” the presidency added.
