  • Buhari’s death ends a long chapter in Nigeria’s post-military democratic journey, having served two presidential terms.
  • He passed away far from home, continuing a trend of Nigerian leaders seeking medical care abroad.

The former president, Muhammadu Buhari, has died in a clinic in London, United Kingdom.

The spokesperson to the former president, Garba Shehu, confirmed the incident on Sunday in a post on X.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.

“May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” he wrote.

The former president was 82 years old.

WITHIN NIGERIA understands that Buhari has been sick for weeks and was receiving treatment at the London hospital.

No details were given about the cause of death.

Buhari, who served as president from 2015 to 2023, had a history of seeking medical treatment in the United Kingdom.

He was a retired major general in the Nigerian Army and previously led the country as military head of state from 1983 to 1985.

He made a return to power in 2015 as a democratically elected president.

Buhari was the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president in Nigeria’s history.

The family has not yet released funeral arrangements.
