  • The president reached out to Aishat Buhari and conveyed his condolences to the grieving family.
  • Tinubu ordered flags flown at half-mast in honour of late former president and ex-military leader.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom.

The directive, according to the presidency, is to enable Shettima accompany the remains of former president, Muhammadu Buhari, back to Nigeria.

In a statement signed by the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the late president died on Friday at about 4:30pm in London following a prolonged illness.

He said the president had spoken with the former first lady, Mrs Aishat Buhari, and extended his condolences to the family.

“President Tinubu has offered his deep condolences to the former first lady and the entire Buhari family,” the statement said.

The president further ordered that all national flags across public buildings and missions abroad be flown at half-mast.

The measure, the presidency said, is in honour of the former Nigerian leader who had served the country both as military ruler and elected president.

Buhari was elected as a democratic president in 2015 and was re-elected for a second term in 2019.

He had earlier led the country as a military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
