  • The Interior minister said Buhari’s leadership reflected strong principles that shaped governance and democratic values across the country.
  • The federal government called on Nigerians to uphold peace and unity as a way to honour the late president’s aspirations for Nigeria.

The federal government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The holiday comes as part of the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by the President, Bola Tinubu.

The minister of interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement in a statement signed by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo explained that the declaration was approved by the President to recognise Buhari’s impact on Nigeria’s political and democratic development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the minister said.

“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

He urged citizens to use the occasion to promote peace, national unity, and patriotic values in line with the former president’s vision.

Buhari died on Sunday while receiving medical treatment at a clinic in London, United Kingdom.
