The president of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, Muhammadu Buhari, will be buried on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Daura, Katsina state.
The governor of Katsina state, Dikko Radda, announced the burial arrangement while addressing journalists on Monday.
He said the decision followed consultations with the late president’s family and close associates in London.
“The remains of the former leader will arrive in Katsina on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, by noon,” Radda said.
He added, “The burial will take place in Daura, the hometown of the late president, by 2pm the same day.”
Radda expressed condolences on behalf of the Katsina state government and the people to Buhari’s family and Nigerians.
Paperwork for the release of Buhari’s body from the London hospital where he died has commenced.
Vice president Kashim Shettima and the chief of staff to the president, Femi Gbajabiamila, arrived in London on Monday to receive the body.
They were received by the minister of foreign affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and the governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum.
Meanwhile, mourners have gathered at Buhari’s residence in Daura ahead of his burial.
Friends, neighbours, and associates described the former president as humble, generous, and disciplined.
One of his close friends, Sulaiman Yarin-Katsina, said, “His unwavering simplicity made him remain deeply connected to his community throughout his life.”
Heavy security has been deployed across Daura, including at the Emirate Council, though commercial activities remain unaffected.
Dignitaries who visited Buhari’s residence ahead of the burial include the deputy governor of Katsina state, Faruk Jobe, and the deputy chief of staff, Mukhtar Saulawa.
Also present were the state APC chairman, Sani Daura; commissioner for internal security and home affairs, Nasiru Danmusa; and AIG Zone 14, Aliyu Musa.
The former president passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a hospital in London.
Tributes have continued to pour in, with many describing Buhari as a man of integrity and unwavering principle.
He previously served as military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
