  • Buhari was buried in a favourite sitting spot within his Daura home’s garden, surrounded by family and dignitaries.
  • A gun salute was fired as the military paid final respects to Nigeria’s former commander-in-chief.

Former President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was buried on Tuesday in the garden of his private residence in Daura, Katsina State.

The funeral prayers were conducted earlier in the day at a helipad near his country home, attracting a crowd of dignitaries.

Buhari was laid to rest in a familiar spot in his compound where he often sat during his lifetime.

The burial was conducted with military honours as pallbearers wheeled his body, draped in the Nigerian flag, to the graveside.

Gun salutes were fired in honour of the former commander-in-chief, adding solemnity to the final rites.

The chief of defence staff, General Christopher Musa, delivered Buhari’s citation at the graveside before the interment.

Among those present at the graveside were the prime minister of Niger Republic, Ali Lamine Zeine, and President Bola Tinubu.

Others included Vice-President Kashim Shettima and former vice-president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

Earlier, President Tinubu received the remains of the late president at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina.

Tinubu, who arrived from Abuja at 1.42pm, inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Nigerian military.

The Nigerian Air Force plane conveying Buhari’s corpse touched down at 1.51pm, shortly after Tinubu’s arrival.

The former president died on Sunday, July 13, at a London hospital in the United Kingdom after a prolonged illness.
