Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, has disclosed the details of his never-shared-before conversation with late former President Muhammadu Buhari during his campaign.
Obi, who paid a condolence visit to Buhari’s family in Daura on Wednesday, came third in the 2023 presidential election with six million votes.
The former Anambra governor had reached out to Buhari, who was then the President of Nigeria, to inform him of his presidential ambition and desire to succeed him.
Speaking to the press after the condolence visit in Daura, Katsina State, Obi recounted his conversation with the former President.
Obi said Buhari appealed to him to put Nigeria’s interest first and take care of poor Nigerians.
“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning. And I remember his words, ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians’. That I can still remember. And I believe he did his best within his capacity,” Obi said.
Buhari died on Sunday in London, the United Kingdom, at 82 years old. The former President was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State on Tuesday
