The Super Falcons of Nigeria booked their place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over South Africa.
Nigeria overcame the reigning champions in a thrilling semi-final encounter, which was decided by a stoppage-time goal in Morocco.
Forward Rasheedat Ajibade opened scoring for the Falcons with a well-taken penalty just before half-time, giving Nigeria the lead going into the break.
Earlier in the game, South Africa had to replace striker Hildah Magaia, who was forced off injured in the 26th minute.
Thubelihle Makhubela came on to take Magaia’s place as the Banyana Banyana sought to recover from the early setback.
South Africa came back stronger in the second half and levelled in the 60th minute through a penalty converted by Linda Motlhalo.
Just as the match seemed destined for extra time, Michelle Alozie netted the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Alozie’s strike came after a smart assist from Esther Okoronkwo, who unlocked the South African defence with a fine pass.
Multiple substitutions added intensity to the contest, but Nigeria maintained their composure in the final minutes to seal the result.
With the win, Nigeria will now play in the final and remain on course to reclaim the WAFCON trophy.
