  • Abure said LP had become a national force under his leadership, despite challenges facing the party.
  • LP has lost senators, house of representatives members and chieftains to rival parties since the 2023 elections.

The factional chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has appealed to members aligning with other political parties to return to the party.

Abure made the call at the party’s national executive committee meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

He said the LP was open to reconciliation with those who had strayed, provided they acknowledged their actions.

According to him, while the Nigerian constitution guarantees freedom of association, the Labour Party forbids dual membership.

The factional party leader added that the party was closely monitoring members fraternising with rival political platforms.

“The constitution of the party is very clear and the constitution of Nigeria is equally clear, that you cannot belong to two political parties at the same time,” he stated.

“We are watching members romancing other parties, and at the appropriate time, the party organs will decide what will happen,” he added.

“We are, therefore, using this opportunity to say that our doors are open. They should sheathe their swords and come back to the house.”

“If they come back and apologise, we are ready to forgive them because we believe that there is no victor and there is no vanquished,” he stated.

Abure described himself as a leader who had built the party into a national political force.
