Nigerian international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has received a two-month suspension from official football activities after being found guilty of illegal betting by Italian sports authorities.

The ban stems from suspicious betting around a Serie A match on March 11, 2024, during which Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting in Udinese’s 2–1 win over Lazio. Betting company Sisal reportedly flagged irregular wagers placed specifically on the defender receiving a booking in that fixture.

Italian authorities launched an investigation and, following a series of official proceedings and interviews, resolved that Okoye’s involvement warranted disciplinary action.

He has now been barred from participating in any football-related events — including training, matches, and club activities — for a period of two months, effective immediately.

The investigation was reportedly initiated after Sisal’s alert led to further scrutiny by Italian sports regulators. Though short of explicit evidence of match-fixing, the pattern of bets on Maduka Okoye’s booking was deemed unethical and in violation of sports betting regulations.

In response, Italian authorities enforced the ban in line with UEFA and FIGC rules meant to preserve the integrity of the game.

Udinese Calcio, Okoye’s Serie A club, has temporarily replaced him on their squad list, citing the ban. The club has reportedly installed a Danish goalkeeper as interim cover, though they are maintaining silence on whether Okoye will return post-suspension or continue with the squad.
