The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, says Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, did nothing wrong by asking former Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, not to visit the state without his permission.
Recall that Okpebholo, at a political event last Friday, asked the former Anambra State governor not to enter the state without security clearance because three people were killed during his last visit to the state.
The governor came under fire for the remark as he was widely castigated, with many saying his statement amounted to a threat to Obi’s life.
Speaking on the matter, Wike said Okpebholo did not threaten Obi but did the right as a governor because he is the chief security officer of the state and the safety of Obi is his responsibility.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, recounted how he provided Obi with vehicles and logistics during his presidential campaign in the State.
Wike spoke in Benin City, during the launch of modern mass transit buses by the Edo State government.
The Minister dismissed claims that Okpebholo threatened Obi against visiting the state.
He said: “When I was governor of Rivers State, when Peter Obi was coming to my state, he notified me, and I provided vehicles and logistics for him, because at that level, as a presidential candidate, anything that happens to him will be my fault.
“Governor Okpebholo, the statement you made is correct. Obi must inform you before coming to Edo State.”
