- Hashim described the PDP as the only political platform with proven grassroots presence in nearly every polling unit since 1998.
- He dismissed worries about the party’s relevance, attributing recent defections to blackmail and pressure, not genuine grassroots rejection.
A former presidential candidate, Gbenga Olawepo Hashim, has formally rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Hashim said his decision was based on the party’s consistent national spread and its capacity to rescue Nigeria from worsening challenges.
He spoke on Wednesday during a meeting with members of the PDP National Working Committee at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The politician explained that the PDP, since its formation in 1998, had maintained structures in nearly every polling unit across the federation.
He said the party was originally established as a national platform, and that identity had not changed despite past setbacks.
He said, “The PDP’s grassroots base remains intact, even as some elected officials defected under pressure or political blackmail. I dismiss fears about the party’s dwindling influence.”
Hashim urged members of the PDP not to be discouraged by the departure of certain politicians from the party.
He said the real power of any political movement was in its people, not in a few powerful individuals, adding that the PDP still commands that strength.
He commended the acting national chairman of the party, Ambassador Umar Damagum, for his calm approach and ability to maintain unity during tense periods.
According to him, Damagum’s style of leadership was critical in preventing further crisis and sustaining the party during difficult moments.
Hashim also advised the PDP to field a competent, visionary candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He said such a candidate must prioritise national security, economic revival and social justice to inspire voters across the country.
He added, “With unity, discipline, and courage, the PDP will rise again, not just to win elections but to rebuild Nigeria.”
