President Bola Tinubu has bestowed national honours on the D’Tigress team for their remarkable triumph at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket tournament.

Tinubu further announced that each player would receive a cash gift of $100,000, while members of the technical crew would be rewarded with $50,000 each.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who stood in for the president, disclosed these rewards when the team was hosted at the presidential villa on Monday.

Shettima also declared that all players and officials would be given a residential flat in the Federal Capital Territory as part of the government’s gesture.

The Nigerian women’s basketball team clinched a 78-64 victory over Mali in Saturday’s Afrobasket final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan.

With this win, Nigeria became the first nation to claim the Women’s Afrobasket title five consecutive times, setting a new continental record.

Their victory also secured an automatic spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled to hold in Berlin, Germany.

In recognition of their historic feat, Tinubu conferred the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honour on every team member.
