The Lagos State Government has cautioned residents of the Lekki area against drilling boreholes, warning that the water may be unsafe for consumption.
Mahmood Adegbite, permanent secretary in the office of drainage services and water resources, gave the warning during a stakeholders’ meeting.
He said water from boreholes in the peninsula is laced with faecal matter and could expose consumers to dangerous diseases.
“Anyone sinking a borehole within the Lekki axis is most likely drinking what I will describe as ‘shit water’,” Adegbite said.
According to him, the government has plans for wastewater treatment in the area, which could significantly reduce the spread of infections.
“If we are able to treat all the wastewater in this axis, we should be able to eradicate any form of disease that might result from untreated waste,” he added.
On flooding, Adegbite admitted that although government has invested heavily in drainage projects, the impact of flooding in the city is still worrisome.
“Despite the fact that we have committed so much, we still need to do a lot in that space,” he said.
Only last week, residents complained bitterly about the worsening flood situation after hours of torrential rainfall across the state.
The government has also warned that more heavy rains and flash floods are expected in parts of Lagos in the coming days.
