  • Jonathan met with former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, retd., last weekend in his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State, and briefed him on his desire to run for one term in 2027.

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, may dip his feet in the murky waters of Nigerian politics again as he concludes plans to vie for the presidency again.

The former president will throw his hat in the ring for the 2027 presidential election, per a report.

In recent months, speculations have been swirling about Jonathan’s possible return to active politics as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, intensifies its push to bring back the former president into its fold as part of its rebuilding process.

Jonathan’s readiness to vie for the presidency in 2027 was confirmed by a close ally of the Bayelsa-born politician with an intimate knowledge of the political moves.

The source told Vanguard that the plan to co-opt Jonathan into contesting on PDP’s platform had gone far, and that he had agreed to run.

The media outlet quoted the source as saying that the former president was going into the race to address Nigeria’s rising poverty, hardship and the general suffering that had ravaged Nigeria since the All Progressives Congress, APC, took over power in 2015.

The source also disclosed that Jonathan had already met behind the scenes with some top political leaders within and outside the PDP, particularly in the north, to consult them and seek their support for the 2027 presidential race.

According to the politician, Jonathan met with former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, retd., last weekend in his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State, and briefed him on his desire to run for one term in 2027.

Meanwhile, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mallam Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed that the party has been making moves to bring Jonathan back.

“Many Nigerians have come to realise the mistake they made in not re-electing Dr. Jonathan. They now acknowledge his achievements and are even apologising, pleading with him to return and rescue the country,” Abdullahi said
