  • Tinubu appointed 39-year-old engineer Ramat as acting NERC boss to avoid leadership vacuum in regulatory body.
  • Former Ungogo LG chairman takes charge of power regulation pending confirmation by the national assembly.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the acting chairman and chief executive officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The appointment was announced in a statement on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Ramat previously served as chairman of Ungogo Local Government Area in Kano State from 2021 to 2024.

According to Onanuga, the new CEO will serve in acting capacity pending his confirmation by the Senate.

The President also nominated Abubakar Yusuf as commissioner for consumer affairs and Fouad Olayinka Animashun as commissioner for finance and management services.

“President Bola Tinubu has nominated Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC),” Onanuga stated.

He said Ramat, 39, is an electrical engineer and administrator with a PhD in Strategic Management, among other qualifications.

Onanuga added that the new appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.

“To avoid a leadership vacuum in the critical regulatory agency, the President directed that Engr. Ramat assume office in acting capacity pending his screening by the Senate, as stipulated by the law,” the presidential aide said.

Tinubu urged the new appointees to use their expertise to advance the administration’s agenda in the power sector.

In a statement accepting his appointment, Ramat said, “Alhamdulillah. From leading just a single LGA to now being entrusted with matters concerning all the 774 LGAs through NERC. Truly, God is great.”

Ramat expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve.
