  • Agbakahi noted that the release of Kanu will be a major factor in determining how Tinubu will perform at the polls in the region in 2027.

President Bola Tinubu has been admonished to release the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, to make electoral and political inroads in the South East.

This admonition was issued by George Agbakahi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and leader of the South East Tinubu’s Support Group.

Agbakahi noted that the release of Kanu will be a major factor in determining how Tinubu will perform at the polls in the region in 2027.

Speaking on Friday when he appeared on Arise Television’s Morning Show, he said Tinubu’s re-election may be determined by the status of Kanu’s trial.

He highlighted the achievements of the Tinubu administration in the region, especially in terms of infrastructure development.

“You know, the President has done a whole lot concerning infrastructure development in the Southeast. Almost all the major roads in the Southeast are now under construction. Go to Enugu-Onitsha road that has not been touched by previous administrations, it is under construction,” he said.

“Go to Enugu-Port Harcourt road, the same thing is happening; it’s working, a very important economic road. Aba to Ikot Ekpene, which has not been touched for almost 18 to 20 years, is currently under construction as we speak.

“The issue of the South East Development Centre Commission, SEDC, with 150 billion naira, you know, for them to use in economic development is working.”

Agbakahi, however, maintained that beyond infrastructure, the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu remains a critical political issue that could influence voter sentiment in the region.

“The president has done a lot in the South East, and the only area that I believe is a major variable, also in the South East, is the issue of Nnamdi Kanu. That is a major variable that will also determine the election in the Southeast. And I’m quite sure that, as time goes on, our president is a father figure who understands the intricacies of politics and governance,” he added
