Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has regained his freedom after two days in police detention.
Sowore, who confirmed his release on a post on his X handle on Friday, thanked supporters who stood by him during his ordeal.
Sowore accused the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of unlawful conduct.
He, however, said that his freedom was “nothing to celebrate” as the struggle for justice continues.
“The Nigeria Police Force and its illegal IGP have capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, unwarranted, and unlawful detention.
“However, it is nothing to celebrate, work tongues, but I can’t do without thanking you all for not giving up. You’ve all seen the power of unity #RevolutionNow,” he stated
Sowore, in the company of his supporters, had arrived at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, on Wednesday afternoon to honour the police invitation over alleged “forgery and inciting disturbance”.
But reports emerged that the police detained him on Thursday. The development was greeted with outrage and widespread condemnation across the country.
The police were also lambasted for allegedly breaking the hand of Sowore during an attempt to forcibly transfer him from custody to court on Thursday.
His detention drew the attention of influential politicians like former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who described it as an abuse of power.
Some Nigerians also took to the streets on Friday to protest the treatment of the activist and demand his release.
