  • Tambuwal was questioned by EFCC over alleged breach of the Money Laundering Act.
  • PDP described the probe as a politically driven attempt to damage Tambuwal’s reputation.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto has dismissed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) investigation into Aminu Tambuwal as politically driven.

Tambuwal, the senator for Sokoto south, faced questioning by the EFCC on Monday.

He is accused of withdrawing N189 billion in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Hassan Sanyinnawal, the PDP publicity secretary in Sokoto, described the probe as a mere “fishing expedition” resurrected from a long-dormant case that previously failed to yield evidence.

Sanyinnawal claimed that the investigation is the result of efforts by political figures in Sokoto and Abuja aiming to tarnish Tambuwal’s reputation and pressure him to relent in his opposition to misgovernance.

He urged the anti-corruption agency to cease what he called selective prosecutions and focus on authentic corruption matters.

“Our confidence in Tambuwal’s character remains unshaken despite these politically motivated investigations,” the statement read.

“We will not be intimidated by these repressive tactics, regardless of those behind them,” Sanyinnawal added.

Tambuwal served as Sokoto state governor from 2015 until 2023 and was speaker of the house of representatives between 2011 and 2015.
