Babachir Lawal’s criticisms driven by personal loss — APC

  • The APC accused Babachir Lawal of attacking Tinubu due to losing vice-presidential slot to “better, more qualified” candidate.
  • The party branded Lawal a “political content creator” and “soothsayer” struggling to remain relevant in Nigerian politics.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused former secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal, of attacking President Bola Tinubu out of bitterness.

In a post on its X handle, the party alleged that Lawal’s criticisms were fuelled by his desire to become vice-president, a position Tinubu gave to “a better, more qualified and more refined candidate.”

The APC described the ex-SGF as “the latest political content creator cum soothsayer” who is “gasping for political oxygen.”

According to the party, Lawal has made several provocative remarks in the past, but none matches the “incoherence and desperation” he displayed during a Monday television appearance.

“That outing revealed a deeply troubled soul, slowly unravelling; even if wildly swinging in all directions, wearing ideological inconsistency like a badge of honour,” the APC said.

“It was obvious that the entire performance on Channels yesterday was nothing more than a poorly scripted attempt to bait president Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is the same man Babachir once swore the ‘wrath of God’ should fall upon anyone who stood in Tinubu’s way to the presidency,” it added.

The party noted that Lawal now “casually flings insults” at the president, “disrespecting his office and making derogatory references.”

The ruling party described such behaviour as reflective of “a fair-weather friend, an opportunist, clout chaser and clay-footed political crusader.”

The APC advised Lawal to retrace his steps and warned him against denigrating the presidency.

It added that his televised monologues “do not make him relevant but merely remind Nigerians why he is no longer in office and is fast sinking into political and community oblivion.”

Recall that Lawal claimed the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, won the 2023 election.

However, the APC insisted that Tinubu won and remains Nigeria’s duly elected president until 2027.

“Your claim that Peter Obi ‘won’ the 2023 elections is not only egregious but a barefaced lie. The people have spoken, the law has sanctioned it; the courts have ruled,” the APC replied.
