  • Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, also warned against using State institutions to persecute opposition politicians

A former governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has regained his freedom after he was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Tambuwal, who was taken into custody on Monday, after he showed up at the corporate headquarters of the commission to honour an invitation at about 11:16 a.m.

He was said to have been grilled for the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of some cash to the tune of N189 billion when he held sway as the governor of his State.

The former speaker of the House of Representatives was said to be unable to answer questions posed to him.

His arrest and detention sparked criticism with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) saying it is politically motivated.

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, also warned against using State institutions to persecute opposition politicians.

He was subsequently released on Tuesday by the commission, Daily Trust reports.

A source at the commission said he was granted administrative bail, saying he would be allowed to leave the commission’s headquarters after perfecting his bail conditions.

“He has already been granted administrative bail. We’ve extracted what we need from him and he will soon leave our headquarters after perfecting his bail conditions,” the detective confided in Daily Trust.

When asked whether the former governor would face charges or be arraigned in court, the source declined to comment further.

However, Tambuwal’s release has not been officially confirmed by the EFCC.
