Nwifuru approves ₦50 million for basketball court construction, pledging continued sports development support to inspire young athletes
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has honoured Blessing Ejiofor, an Ebonyi-born basketball player who was part of Nigeria’s victorious women’s national team at the 2025 Afrobasket tournament.
At a reception held at Government House, Abakaliki, on Friday, the governor presented Ejiofor with a cash gift of ₦30 million and a duplex located in the state capital’s Civil Servant Estate.

Describing her as “a great ambassador” of Ebonyi, Nwifuru praised Ejiofor’s role in the continental triumph, noting that her achievement placed the state on the global sporting stage.
“I was a little sad during the last WAFCON because Ebonyi’s presence was not there,” the governor said. “But I was happy when I heard, while abroad, that Ebonyi was represented in this championship that we won. This is one of my agitations that has come to be.”
He commended Ejiofor’s determination and resilience in reaching the national team, describing her success as a product of both hard work and divine grace.
The governor also approved Ejiofor’s request for improved basketball infrastructure in Ebonyi, directing the release of ₦50 million to the Ministry of Sports for the construction of a standard basketball court for male and female players.
He assured that his administration would continue to support sports development and encourage young athletes across the state to pursue excellence.
