Dr Ali Kiyawa of the New Nigeria Peoples Party has won the Bagwai/Shanono State Assembly by-election in Kano State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission Returning Officer for the election, Professor Hassan Shitu, declared the NNPP winner on Sunday morning.

According to Shitu, Kiyama garnered 16,198 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress candidate, Ahmad Kadamu, who polled 5,347 votes.

News Agency of Nigeria report that some party leaders of the NNPP staged a sit-in at the INEC office in Kano after accusing the commission of attempting to manipulate the Ghari/Tsanyawa constituency by-election.

In a related development, the All Progressives Grand Alliance won the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency by-election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared the APGA candidate, Ifeoma Azikiwe, the poll winner on Sunday morning.

INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Ibiam Ekpe, announced that Azikiwe garnered 7,774 votes to defeat her closest rival and the candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Justice Azuka, who got 1,909 votes.

According to him, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr Ezennia Ojekwe, and that of the Young Progressives Party, Njideka Ndiwe, scored 1,371 and 655 votes respectively.

The INEC Returning Officer applauded the various candidates for their peaceful conduct and hailed the voters for turning out en masse during the exercise.

He said, “The candidate of APGA, Ifeoma Azikiwe, having certified the requirements of the law by scoring the highest in the election, is hereby returned elected.”

Azikiwe will now fill the seat left vacant by the former lawmaker, Justice Azuka, who was kidnapped and subsequently killed and would serve out his remaining two years
