President Donald Trump of the United States has reacted to purported widespread persecution and pogrom against Christians in Nigeria.
In recent weeks, allegations of unconscionable treatment and mass Killing of Christians in Nigeria have gained traction on social media.
The allegations, which were first made by popular American TV host, Bill Maher, have since been amplified by popular politician and Texas senator Ted Cruz and other key figures in the Republican Party and Trump’s government. They are also pushing for Trump’s authorisation of military intervention in Nigeria to save Christians in the country.
Reacting to the development on Friday night, Trump echoed the sentiment of Maher and Cruz and lent his voice to the narrative of widespread targeted killing of Christians in Nigeria, adding that Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria.
In view of the above, he declared Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern, CPC, and also added the West African nation to a State Department watch list.
Writing on his Truth Social account, the US leader, who stated that Christians are being slaughtered by radical Islamists, also directed Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into the claim of genocide and report back to him.
According to the US president, he was placing Nigeria, Africa’s top oil producer and most populous nation, on a “Countries of Particular Concern” list of nations the US deems to have engaged in religious freedom violations.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” — But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, are slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter, and report back to me. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other Countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!,” He wrote
According to the State Department’s website, the list includes China, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, and Pakistan, among others.
Trump said he had asked US Representatives Riley Moore and Tom Cole, as well as the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee, to look into the matter and report back to him
