The senior lawyer asserted that the court has no wriggle room or power to exercise any discretion other than to impose maximum punishment on him in line with the provisions of the law.
The Nigerian government has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to sentence Nnamdi Kanu to death following his conviction on terrorism charges on Thursday.
The demand for imposition of the death sentence on the embattled leader of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) was made by Counsel to the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.
Addressing the court after Kanu’s conviction by Justice James Omotosho, Awomolo argued that the offences Kanu was convicted of are only punishable by death under sections of the law under which he was charged.
The senior lawyer asserted that the court has no wriggle room or power to exercise any discretion other than to impose maximum punishment on him in line with the provisions of the law.
Awomolo held that Kanu, throughout the trial, was arrogant, unruly and pugacious in his attitude and showed no contrition or penitence for the crimes he committed against the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He also sought the forfeiture of all properties seized from Kanu to the Federal Government.
The prosecution counsel equally demanded that Kanu be taken to prison where his security will be guaranteed till the judgment against him is executed
