Vitalis Okwudiri, an unemployed man, was docked in a Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Tuesday for allegedly defrauding a client of N100,000.
Okwudiri, 56, was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating.
Ade Adeyanju, the Prosecution Counsel, told the court that the defendant swindled the complainant in order to purchase a Nissan Altima car worth N900,000 from him.
According to Adeyanju, the defendant claimed ownership of the car and, in the process, induced and deceived the complainant, collecting N100,000 as an advance deposit.
The prosecutor said when the complainant discovered dishonesty from the defendant, he asked for a refund of his money which he confessed to have converted to his personal use.
The offences, he said, contravened the provisions of the Penal Code.
Okwudiri, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Judge, Umar Mayana, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two reasonable sureties each in like sum and N100,000 to be deposited as part of bail security.
Mayana ordered that the court and police personnel must verify the residential addresses of the sureties.
The Judge adjourned the case until April 18 for further hearing.
